For democratic representation at the United Nations
Global decisions, and global failure to act, shape people’s lives and the future of humanity. Yet the United Nations, the world’s central forum for global governance, mainly represents government executives. A United Nations Parliamentary Assembly would give elected representatives a formal role in global affairs and open a practical path toward people-centered global democracy.

A 2026 civil society declaration on Sustainable Development Goal 16 has called on governments to consider setting up a parliamentary body at the United Nations as part of wider efforts to make the world organization more representative, participatory and democratic.

Discussion at the Trento Festival of Economics
At the Trento Festival of Economics, Italian writer Mario Capanna advocated “for a new form of global democratic governance, including the possibility of a world parliament capable of making strategic decisions for humanity and the planet.” Meaningful political change, he said, will only be possible based on “the recognition that humanity shares one planet and one common destiny.”
Survey suggests renewed support for global cooperation
The Global Solidarity Report 2026 finds renewed support for global citizenship and international cooperation after years of decline. Across 31 countries, more respondents identify as world citizens, support tax contributions to global problem-solving, and back stronger international institutions with enforcement powers. “The public mood is moving and the question is whether internationalists can seize the opportunity”, the report says.
